# The App Category object

> The fixed list of categories an app can belong to, and why a category's label is the value you send as an app's category.

An app category is one item in the fixed list of categories an [app](https://docs.lumos.com/reference/v1/objects/app.md) can
belong to, such as `Developers` or `IT & Security`. Lumos owns the list. Your organization can't add
to it.

## Attributes

| `label` | string | The category's name. Always present. |

## Using `label` as an app's category

`label` is the only field, so it's also the identifier. It's the exact string an app reports in
`category` on [List Apps](https://docs.lumos.com/api-reference/v1/apps/list-apps.md) and
[Get App](https://docs.lumos.com/api-reference/v1/apps/get-app.md). It's also the value to send as `category_override` when
you create a custom app with [Create App](https://docs.lumos.com/api-reference/v1/apps/create-app.md) or change an app's
category with [Update App](https://docs.lumos.com/api-reference/v1/apps/update-app.md). A request with a
`category_override` that isn't in the list returns `400`. The error message lists the valid values.

it.

## Listing categories

[List App Categories](https://docs.lumos.com/api-reference/v1/app-categories/list-app-categories.md) returns categories
sorted by `label`. The list is short, but it returns results
in pages like every other v1 list, so follow `next_page_token` until it's missing or `null`. Every Lumos user can list categories.
